Buying Wholesale in the Philippines: 9 Tips Every Reseller Should Know
Wholesale is where countless Filipino businesses get their stock — but buying in bulk is a different game from retail shopping, no matter where you source it. Knowing a few rules ahead of time can save you thousands of pesos and a lot of headaches. Here are nine tips every reseller should know.
1. Understand the minimum order quantity (MOQ)
Wholesale prices only apply when you hit a supplier's MOQ — usually a dozen, a bundle, or a set number of pieces. Buying below MOQ means paying near-retail. Always ask for the MOQ and the price at that quantity before you decide.
2. Ask for the price per piece AND per bundle
A supplier might quote "₱720 per dozen." Always convert it to per piece (₱60 here) so you can compare suppliers apples-to-apples and compute your margin cleanly.
3. Negotiate — but reasonably
Haggling (tawad) is expected, especially as your volume grows. The trick is to negotiate on quantity: "If I take five dozen, can you do ₱55 each?" Suppliers happily drop prices for bigger orders. Lowballing a single dozen just annoys them.
4. Compute your margin before you buy, not after
The classic beginner mistake is buying stock because it's "mura," then realizing there's no profit after shipping and fees. Before ordering, compute:
Selling price − supplier price − shipping per unit − platform/payment fees = your real profit
If that number isn't worth your effort, walk away — no matter how cheap the item is.
5. Factor in shipping and packaging
Wholesale prices look amazing until you add a courier bill. Ask who shoulders shipping and whether the price includes packaging. For online resellers, also budget for your own pouches, bubble wrap, and flyers — these eat into margin.
6. Inspect for defects and shortages
When sourcing in bulk, a few defective or missing pieces are common. Count and check everything on arrival, and report problems to the supplier immediately with photos. Good suppliers replace or credit defects; this is also why you keep your terms in writing.
7. Build a relationship with 2–3 suppliers
Don't spread yourself across twenty random sellers. Find two or three reliable suppliers and order from them consistently. Loyal buyers get better prices, first dibs on new stock, and more flexibility when you need a rush order.
8. Buy seasonally, ahead of demand
Christmas, Valentine's, back-to-school, and fiesta seasons drive huge demand. Sourcing weeks ahead means you get stock before prices spike and before suppliers run out. Plan your calendar around Philippine selling seasons.
9. Keep records of every order
Track what you bought, from whom, at what price, and how it sold. Over a few months this tells you which products actually make money and which suppliers are worth keeping — turning guesswork into a real business.
